ПЕРШІ КРОКИ ПРОПОВІДНИЦЬКОЇ АКТИВНОСТІ ЧАРЛЬЗА ТЕЙЗА РАССЕЛА

Окреслено контекст проведення першої проповідницької компанії Чарльза Тейза Рассела, засновника Товариства Вартової Башти, та релігійного руху Міжнародні Дослідники Біблії, який сьогодні є релігійною організацією Свідків Єгови. З'ясовано, що в першій половині 1870-х років Чарльз Рассел та група його однодумців через дослідження Біблії дійшли певних висновків, що стали основою їхньої доктринальної системи. Визначено, що в той самий період незалежний адвентистський служитель Нельсон Барбур зі своїми послідовниками переосмислили ідею другого приходу Христа після пережитого ними розчарування у 1874 р. Вони знайшли теологічне підґрунтя новому погляду, згідно з яким повернення Христа насправді тоді відбулося, однак невидимим чином.
Установлено, що саме спільність переконання у невидимому способі повернення Христа стала приводом до знайомства Чарльза Рассела та Нельсона Барбура в 1876 р. Це знайомство зробило Чарльза Рассела відкритим до розуміння важливості дослідження пророчих періодів книги Даниїла. Виявлено, що основою тлумачення пророчої схеми, з якою він ознайомився та прийняв, була відредагована схема, яку сповідували учасники руху Вільяма Міллера 1830-х –1844 років.
Виявлено, що нові переконання, усвідомлення того, що настав час виконання подій перед настанням Тисячолітнього царства, підштовхнуло Чарльза Рассела до активних дій у проповіді, на звершення якої він витрачав свій час і кошти. За результатами релігійної діяльності Чарльза Рассела та його співпрацівників значна кількість штатів США була охоплена проповіддю. Оскільки тодішні релігійні лідери не погодилися з ідеєю невидимого повернення Христа в 1874 р., проповідницька діяльність Чарльза Рассела наштовхувалася на значний опір. Водночас дехто відзначав його позитивні персональні якості: впевненість та сміливість у публічних проповідях.
